The CWA Canada Associate Member program runs free workshops at journalism schools and campus papers.
In this workshop, we share tips and advice for navigating today’s media sector as interns, freelancers and employees. This includes: what to look out for in a freelance contract; what rights interns, freelancers and employees have under federal and provincial law; how to make the most of an internship; why it’s important to keep records; and how to negotiate for a higher rate of pay.

How much will this cost? It’s completely free! We are always looking for opportunities to raise awareness about worker rights and to share our knowledge and skills with the next generation of media workers. We are interested in building connections with students, since we know that the best way for media workers to raise standards in the industry is by working together.
How long is this workshop? It can run from 1 – 2 hours, depending on your availability.
Who delivers these workshops? We usually have two presenters. One is a working journalist, freelancer or other media worker who can draw on their own experience with building a meaningful career in the industry. The other is a representative of the union who can draw on their experience supporting and working with media workers across Canada.
Where have you presented? We’ve presented at Ryerson University, Sheridan College, Humber College, University of Toronto, Loyalist College, Wilfrid Laurier University, The Fulcrum (campus paper at University of Ottawa), the annual conference of the Canadian University Press, and other locations.
Who are CWA Canada Associate Members? We are a free union membership that connects 600 student, aspiring, and precarious (intern, temporary, part-time) media workers to each other, and to the resources they need to realize their creative and career goals. We offer training and networking opportunities, we raise awareness about workplace rights, and we advocate for all media work to be valued and respected. Our parent union, CWA Canada, is Canada’s only all-media labour union with about 6,000 members at CBC, The Canadian Press, APTN and newspapers and other media outlets across the country.
